Originating in China, bok choy is very popular in Asian cuisine. This cousin of Chinese cabbage has a milder, sweeter taste than other cabbages, with a slight spiciness, and its leaves have a juicy, crunchy texture.

Like most cabbages, bok choy is packed with vitamins and minerals. It has strong antioxidant properties, and is a good source of fiber and iron.

How do you cook bok choy?

Bok choy can be eaten raw in salads, cooked in soups or braised. It's also great in a wok with garlic and ginger. It goes well with pork, fish and shellfish, and is delicious with stir-fried noodles or pad thai.

In China, it is also eaten as a stuffing in steamed bites such as bao, or in soup. You can enhance its flavor with oyster sauce, and it goes well with mushrooms.

Our tips for successfully growing your bok choy

Bok choy is harvested when the leaves are tender and the stems still crisp. You can start harvesting the outer leaves when they reach about 15 to 20 centimetres in height. Use scissors to cut the leaves near the base of the plant, taking care not to damage the central stems.
